Museum Victoria holds one of Australiaís most significant childrenís folkloric collections: the Australian Childrenís Folklore Collection. Developed from research begun in the 1970s by Dr June Factor and Dr Gwenda Davey, the collection now consists of more than 10 000 card files listing childrenís games, rhymes, riddles, jokes, superstitions and other kinds of childrenís folklore. Other material includes photographs, play artefacts, audio and video tapes, and a number of specialist collections of childrenís lore, including the collection of renowned American folklorist Dorothy Howard. The Museum has established a reference committee to oversee all activities relating to the collection and is currently seeking funding for its development. An inaugural Dorothy Howard lecture series, funded through a Fullbright scholarship, will take place in Melbourne in October 2002, featuring Professor Brian Sutton-Smith. Through its partnership with the University of Melbourneís Australia Centre, the Museum has also received an ARC Linkage grant to fund a PhD research project which will focus on the Australian Childrenís Folklore Collection. An information sheet about the Australian Childrenís Folklore Collection can be obtained through the Museum Victoria website: http://www.museum.vic.gov.au |
